Sunday School and Confirmation Registration

On the 23rd January teachers and pupils were involved with the registration of more than ninety students enrolling for Sunday School classes. Grade 10's were registered on the 26th January for the new Confirmation group.

The wonderful news is that 10 of last year's  confirmands have volunteered for training as catechists and will be assisting the experienced teachers until they are qualified.

Ordination of Deacons

Saturday, 19th February, was a joyful day for the Immaculate Conception Parish in East London as Bishop Michael Coleman ordained four men to the permanent diaconate - Wayne Lawrence of Immaculate Conception Parish, Mike Mene of St. Paul's, Ndwana, one of a cluster of five communities in the King William's Town area, and Brian Fritz and Les Rensburg of St. Martin de Porres Parish in East London.

It was a special occasion for Immaculate Conception Parish in particular as Wayne Lawrence is its first Permanent Deacon.  The morning started at 9h30am with some spirited singing by the young people of the choir from Deacon Mene's communities and then at 10h00am came the entrance procession with about 30 priests and permanent deacons leading the Bishop and the men about to be ordained to music provided by the St. Martin de Porres band.  The solemn liturgy of ordination which followed made a deep impression on the congregation of about 700 who attended, some of them accommodated in Our Lady's Catholic Centre across the road from the Church with live pictures and sound from the Church.  The morning ended with a lunch for the Bishop, priests and the permanent deacons and their wives, with the congregation enjoying light refreshments in the Hall.
